Healthcare professionals are famously bad at looking after themselves. Long shifts, emotional demands, and a culture of putting others first can take a serious toll on your wellbeing.
Prioritising self-care is not selfish - it is essential for sustainable practice. Start with the basics: protect your sleep, eat well during shifts, stay hydrated, and build movement into your day where possible.
Set boundaries between work and home life. If you work shifts, create a wind-down routine after late shifts. Practice saying no when your capacity is full. Many NHS trusts now offer wellbeing services including counselling, physiotherapy, and mindfulness programmes.
Remember: you cannot pour from an empty cup. Investing in your own wellbeing makes you a better clinician.
